New project to preserve 1.5-million-year-old human footprint fossil in Kenya 

In collaboration with National Museums of Kenya and with financial contribution from the British Council Cultural Protection Fund, ICCROM is engaged in a community-centred project focused on the long-term preservation of fossil footprints that date back to approximately 1.5 million years ago. The fossil was found in Ileret, a village on the North Eastern shore of Lake Turkana, Kenya.

From 27 to 31 March 2023, more than 40 participants from 13 countries gathered in Mombasa to discuss practical and strategic ways to make Africa’s heritage an effective source of economic and social opportunities for youth. The Heritage Hubs Connect Forum has been organized in the framework of ICCROM’s Youth.Heritage.Africa (YHA) programme.
