International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction (IDDRR) is an opportunity to acknowledge a common understanding of how the cultural and natural heritage of a place can reinforce our capacity for disaster risk reduction and contribute to a more sustainable future. By considering climate risks, we aim to build resilience, encouraging community-based approaches while linking together the social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development.
Our Flagship programme, First Aid and Resilience for Cultural Heritage in Times of Crisis (FAR) continuously works to build capacities and strengthen initiatives for disaster risk management on the ground, in support of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction for cultural heritage.
inSIGHT – a participatory game is one such initiative that uses community-held knowledge to reduce disaster risk and mitigate climate change. The game enables participants to better understand the interlinks between heritage, climate resilience and sustainable livelihoods. inSIGHT can help local governments pursue Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 11 on Sustainable Cities and Communities, and SDG 13 on Climate Action.
On the occasion of IDDRR, we are excited to announce our forthcoming international conference, Climate.Culture.Peace, which will take place in January 2022. It will be a chance to ‘explore the connections’ that make culture the missing link in our efforts to solve pressing global challenges: from mitigating climate risk to reducing disaster risk and building peace.
International cooperation and culture-based approaches are essential to boost disaster resilience and working together for a better place, leaving no one behind.
