Heritage conservation is founded on the belief that its purpose is to safeguard and transmit heritage for the benefit of current and future generations.1 This commitment to people not yet born forms the bedrock of conservation’s ethical principles and is used to confer moral authority to its practice. And yet, given how much time is spent discussing conservation principles, extraordinarily little time is devoted to thinking deeply about future generations: what the world might be like for them, what their needs and preferences might be, and what the very notion of heritage might mean for them.
