The Course
Japanese paper is internationally recognized as a conservation material and is widely used as the support for Japanese artworks held in collections around the world. However, opportunities to gain in-depth and holistic knowledge of traditional Japanese paper conservation techniques remain limited outside Japan.
The International Course on Conservation of Japanese Paper (JPC) offers a unique opportunity for international professionals to bridge this gap. By strengthening technical expertise in conservation practice and enhancing participants’ ability to address complex preservation challenges, the course contributes to building stronger conservation and risk management capacities within the sector. The course fosters dialogue between Japanese and Western paper conservation traditions and encourages the informed application of Japanese conservation approaches, materials, and techniques to both Japanese and non-Japanese cultural heritage, equipping professionals to respond more effectively to evolving conservation needs worldwide.
Course Methodology
The course is an intensive programme combining theory and practice. It includes lectures, hands-on practical workshops in Tokyo, and a study tour to selected Japanese cities to visit traditional papermaking masters and conservation studios.
Materials used during practical sessions:
As part of the hands-on practical training, participants will work with traditional Japanese conservation tools and materials. Some of these materials are derived from animal sources, in accordance with established Japanese conservation practice.
