ICCROM partnered with the Directorate General of Antiquities (DGA) in Lebanon and The Getty Foundation to organize a four-week field school for the Conservation of Mosaics at the Archaeological Site of Byblos, Lebanon.
The school provided an opportunity to create an on-site mosaic conservation laboratory. Five technicians from Lebanon and seven technicians from Algeria documented, cleaned, consolidated and stored detached mosaic panels exposed outdoors. The Centre Interdisciplinaire de Conservation et de Restauration du Patrimoine (CICRP) in Arles, France led the school as a follow-up to the training undertaken in Arles over 2016 and 2017.
This is a pilot project aimed to develop other field schools in the region over 2018, in particular in Algeria. Over the long term, the aim is to create sustainable mosaic conservation laboratories at main sites in MOSAIKON target countries. In addition to ICCROM, partner institutions include the Directorate General of Antiquities (DGA) Lebanon, Direction de conservation et de restauration du patrimoine culturel en Algérie, musée départemental d'Arles, The Getty Foundation, and CICRP.
