Brief Description of the Programme
Youth.Heritage.Africa (YHA) is one of ICCROM's flagship programmes, established in 2020, which aims to strengthen the active engagement of young professionals and local communities in the safeguarding, enhancement, transmission and ownership of cultural heritage in Africa, and to promote more responsible long-term development through participatory, people-centred approaches. In addition, the programme contributes to the implementation of climate solutions by managing and using heritage resources, knowledge and practices more effectively to mitigate environmental change and the severity of its impacts on African heritage and local communities. Building on field projects, training activities, technical assistance to Member States and institutional partnerships, the YHA programme is implementing innovative initiatives such as Heritage Hubs and the African Young Heritage Leaders network.
In order to strengthen its efforts in learning, data collection and strategic communication, the programme is looking for a motivated intern to support its activities.
Objective of the Internship
To support research, monitoring, documentation, and learning processes related to the implementation of Heritage Hubs, contributing to improved knowledge management, visibility, and programme performance.
Purpose of the Role
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Manager and in collaboration with ICCROM staff and partners, the intern will:
- Research and Learning
- Conduct desk reviews and background research on youth engagement, heritage innovation, and creative entrepreneurship in the four pilot countries.
- Compile and analyze case studies and best practices emerging from the Heritage Hubs.
- Documentation and Communication
Support the collection, organization, and synthesis of monitoring data, success stories, and feedback from programme beneficiaries.
Document best practices and lessons learned from innovative projects related to cultural heritage preservation in Africa.
Prepare brief summaries, newsletters, blog posts, and knowledge products showcasing activities, lessons learned, and youth-led innovations.
Support content development for presentations and reports to donors and stakeholders.
Maintain documentation files and support the creation of a digital archive of project outputs.
Learning Goals
As a capacity-building organization, ICCROM aims to offer interns the unique opportunity to assist our staff on international projects, meet other interns and research fellows, interact with heritage professionals from all over the world, and stimulate their intellectual curiosity. In particular, the intern will have the following learning goals:
Understand international heritage cooperation frameworks. Gain a better understanding of how international institutions and local actors collaborate to preserve cultural heritage in Africa.
Improve research and data analysis skills. Deepen your ability to collect, analyzse and synthesizse qualitative and quantitative data on good practices in cultural heritage conservation and management and on innovative projects implemented by ICCROM through its Heritage Hubs.
- Gain hands-on experience in research, programme monitoring, and knowledge documentation within an international heritage organization.
Contribute to meaningful heritage and youth development initiatives across Africa.
Build professional networks and contribute meaningfully to the advancement of cultural heritage in Africa. Interact with ICCROM staff, other interns and researchers, as well as professionals from the global heritage community , in order to build valuable relationships for future professional development.
Required qualifications:
Education
Enrolled in or recently graduated from a Master's or advanced undergraduate programme in Project Management, cultural management, Development Studies, Cultural Policy, or a related field.
Previous experience
Research and writing skills, particularly in areas related to cultural heritage in Africa.
Experience in documentation or report writing, such as compiling project summaries, case studies of good practices in cultural heritage conservation, etc.
Good knowledge of data collection and analysis tools.
Skills and knowledge
- Demonstrated knowledge of project design tools and coordination processes; familiarity with logical frameworks or results-based management is an asset.
- Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and team-oriented environment.
- Proficiency in office tools (particularly Excel and PowerPoint) and ideally data visualization or design tools (Canva, Tableau, etc.).
- Strong writing and communication skills in English; knowledge of French or Arabic is a plus.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of ICCROM. The knowledge of any other language is an added advantage.
Remuneration
Stipend of USD 700,00 (to be adjusted in EUR) per month. Your round-trip travel costs to and from Rome, your living costs, including accommodation, and any other expenses, will not be covered by ICCROM.
