We are currently seeking the Director-General for ICCROM who is responsible for leading, managing and developing ICCROM to continue to fulfil its mission, vision, and strategic directions and objectives. 

THE COMPANY

The International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) is a long-established intergovernmental organization working to provide tools, knowledge and skills to preserve cultural heritage — from objects in museums to monuments and landscapes — for the benefit of all. ICCROM has been making a difference for more than 65 years through 137 Member States and many partners. 

Those working on the front lines of heritage preservation — including scientists, conservators, museum curators, site managers, archivists, researchers and archaeologists — rely on ICCROM for world-class initiatives in conservation training, information, research, cooperation and advocacy. 

ICCROM is governed by a General Assembly and a Council. The General Assembly meets every two years in Rome, Italy, and it consists of delegates from all ICCROM Member States. Acting under its authority, the Council, which includes 25 members elected by the General Assembly and six ex officio members, monitors the execution of the programme of activities and budget and formulates long-term policies in close collaboration with the Director-General. The incumbent will collaborate with the Council and the Management Team to develop the new ICCROM Strategic Directions for the next six years. 

JOB DESCRIPTION 

Functions and Responsibilities 

Reporting to the Council and accountable to the General Assembly of Member States, the Director-General coordinates the Management Team, plus staff members.  

He/She is responsible for the following: 

  • Preservation, safeguard and promotion of heritage: 
    • Promotes cultural heritage in all forms as an essential component of the environmental, social and economic sustainability of Member States and their communities. 
    • Enhances the knowledge, skills and abilities of Member States and their communities to address critical issues of heritage conservation through research, training and advocacy. 
    • Enhances ICCROM’s reputation among Member States and partners as a reliable leader in heritage conservation.  
       
  • Intergovernmental organization: Establishes, develops and strengthens productive and equitable relationships with each Member State and partner organizations. 

  • Leadership and governance: 

    • Ensures the implementation of decisions of the General Assembly and Council. 
    • Develops and executes ICCROM’s strategic directions and objectives in consultation with Member States and Council. 
    • Ensures that ICCROM’s resources are managed responsibly and deployed efficiently and effectively. 
  • Executive role: Serves as ICCROM’s Chief Executive Officer and legal representative. 

  • Represents ICCROM to Member States and at international conferences, missions and meetings to promote and enhance the reputation and visibility of ICCROM. 

  • Programme of activities and budget: 

    • Drafts and executes the approved biennial programme of activities and budget in consultation with Council and in conformance with the decisions of the General Assembly.  
    • In collaboration with the Management Team, tracks activities and budgets and supervises the outcomes. Reports to the General Assembly and Council on budgets, outcomes, audits, and strategic directions and objectives. 
  • Resource mobilization: Cultivates relationships with external funding sources and seeks funding for ongoing programs and new initiatives. 

  • Management:  

    • Ensures proper institutional management, including developing and maintaining effective leadership and supervision of a team of diverse science and heritage professionals. 
    • Develops and maintains an efficient and effective organizational structure and staffing. 
    • Develops and maintains a positive work environment for staff. 

Main relationships

  • Consults and collaborates with Member States and Council. 
  • Develops and maintains complementary working relationships with donors, partners, professional networks and individuals. 
  • Supervises Unit Managers. 

Candidate Qualifications 

  • Fifteen (15) years of experience working in and managing intergovernmental organizations or academic institutions for cultural heritage. 
  • Familiar with fundraising and resource mobilization. 
  • Knowledge of cultural heritage conservation, management and advocacy at the international level. 
  • Skilled in international diplomacy. 
  • Ability to build and maintain relationships at the global level with different institutional stakeholders and Member States. 
  • Experienced in managing large teams and/or offices and supervising heritage professionals. 
  • Skilled in delivering outcomes in a complex environment through a clear focus on planning while remaining flexible and agile as situations change. 

Education 

  • Cultural heritage management, conservation and preservation of cultural properties and related disciplines 

Languages  

  • Fluency in English is mandatory; fluency in French, Spanish and/or Italian is a plus

  • The position is based in Rome (Italy) 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT  

The initial employment period lasts for four years, with the possibility of being renewed for two more years. 

The compensation & benefits package reflects the responsibilities of the position (D2 Grade, according to the salary scale for the Professional and higher categories of the International Civil Service Commission). 

A relocation fee is included.
