The Ibero-American region has an important heritage with diverse and significant cultural expressions, ancestral cultures and subcultures, strong links between culture and nature, and rich reserves of traditional and indigenous knowledge. However, this heritage and its communities face serious threats caused by social, political, economic and environmental factors, in particular climate change. This includes different types of natural hazards (earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, hurricanes, floods, droughts, landslides and mudslides, or forest fires), as well as anthropogenic threats such as unsustainable mass tourism, rapid urbanization, social conflicts, among others. The exposure of heritage and its communities to such threats, associated with existing vulnerabilities due to problems of governance, management, conservation, lack of awareness and professional opportunities, often results in threats to heritage.

Objectives and themes

The congress seeks to explore the way in which Ibero-American countries are dealing with the risks affecting the region, through systems and mechanisms to reduce existing risks (such as prevention of new risks, mitigation, response and recovery for the heritage and their communities).

Presentations include professionals and institutions in Ibero-America working in disaster risk management including cultural heritage, to share their experience and knowledge to identify existing challenges and needs, and discuss with colleagues from the region, in order to create possible common strategies and concrete actions.

Duration and structure

The congress will be held online, through the Zoom platform, from November 15 to 19, 2021.
Sessions will be divided into themes, including:

  • Risk management policies and strategies for cultural heritage.
  • Climate change
  • Risk management and archaeological heritage
  • Risk management and built heritage
  • Risk management and museums

There will be time for questions from the registered public on the Zoom platform.
