It is with a heavy heart that we commemorate the passing of United Arab Emirates President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan, who died on 13 May 2022. Sheikh Khalifa became Abu Dhabi’s leader in 2004 – succeeding his father, the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan, who is considered the country’s founder – and served as president until the end of his life.

We offer our condolences to the UAE: our long-time partner in cultural heritage protection and advocacy, and home to the ICCROM Regional Office in Sharjah (ICCROM-ATHAR Centre) since 2012.

We honour his legacy and mourn his loss alongside his family and our friends, the people of the United Arab Emirates.
