ICCROM today welcomed the Executive Director of the ALIPH Foundation, Valéry Freeland, to our headquarters in Rome, accompanied by Andrea Balbo, ALIPH Project Manager. They met with Director-General Webber Ndoro, Valerie Magar, Unit Manager, Programmes, and Yasmin Hashem, FAR Programme Assistant.

ICCROM is kickstarting its Heritage Recovery Programme in Mosul, a two-year capacity building programme organized in collaboration with UNESCO and the University of Mosul and with the financial support of the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the European Union.

The joint ICOMOS-ICCROM publication, Analysis of Case Studies in Recovery and Reconstruction brings together the voices and experiences of experts and practitioners working in the field. ICCROM has embarked on a comprehensive programme to build the capacity of young Moslawi architects, engineers and craftsmen to contribute to the recovery of the cultural heritage of Mosul, Iraq. This programme is implemented through an international partnership agreement with UNESCO under the “Revival of the Spirit of Mosul” initiative, and with the financial support of the Government of the United Arab Emirates and the European Union.

The 18th of December coincides with the 47th anniversary of Arabic becoming a United Nations official language. This day is an opportunity to celebrate the richness and global importance of the Arabic language, which has played a catalytic role in culture, science and the arts throughout history. Nowadays, Arabic is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world and it represents a true pillar of diversity, spoken in its varying forms by over 400 million people in 25 countries. 

The Warsaw Recommendation on Recovery and Reconstruction of Cultural Heritage is a document from 2018 constituting a comprehensive set of principles concerning the process of urban reconstruction and rebuilding of historic buildings or complexes of buildings destroyed as a result of armed conflicts or natural disasters.

Under the patronage of H.H Sheikh Dr Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and the Ruler of Sharjah, the primary virtual meetings of the 2nd edition of the Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage concluded on 10 November. The Forum was organized online by ICCROM-Sharjah from 9-10 November 2020, under the title “Authenticity, Community and Conservation in the Arab Thought”. 

Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan Bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and the Ruler of Sharjah, ICCROM-Sharjah will organize virtual meetings as part of the 2nd edition of the Arab Forum for Cultural Heritage, entitled “Authenticity, Community and Conservation in the Arab Thought”, from 9-10 November 2020. This year, due to the precautionary measures imposed by the spread of COVID-19, the Arab Forum will be organized first online. However, a broader event will be held next year, with wider participation of Arab and international experts and professionals.

In the wake of the devastating floods in Yemen and Sudan, ICCROM extends its solidarity to the governments and people of these Member States. We stand ready to provide technical assistance to secure affected cultural heritage. 

Together with the international heritage community, we stand behind the Statement of solidarity with Lebanon and support the mobilization of efforts to recover the damaged cultural heritage in #Beirut.
