Time: 30 January 2018 – 1 February 2018

Place: IUCN Headquarters (Gland, Switzerland)

The objective of the workshop was to review the existing WH management manuals, and set out a possible list of contents, plan of work and timeline for the production of an integrated management manual for World Heritage, relevant to all World Heritage Sites and their wider landscapes, whether listed as cultural or natural properties. Through the 3 days discussions and brainstorming, a new direction of establishing a Heritage Management Resources Platform was formulated. The new platform will offer principles, methods and tools that will be applicable to wider management of cultural and natural sites with a people centred approach. The platform will provide multiple entry points and accessible content most needed for the site coordinators. The approaches in the manual will be tested in multiple regions and different languages.

Aspects such as the general review of existing manuals; overall approach for new content, reasons for managing culture and nature; values and attributes (OUV and other values); threats and opportunities (heritage and society); linking people centred approaches and rights/knowledge/livelihoods and benefits; tourism/visitors/interpretation; legislations/institutions/governance/policy; monitoring/evaluation/effectiveness; capacity building for management; addressing disaster risk management and climate change; and conceptualising management systems and plans were discussed during the workshop.
