Digital microscopy is a technique that allows for quick and straightforward microscopic observation and imaging, using dedicated instruments that display a live image on a screen. This presentation will introduce digital microscopy as a routine tool for heritage science, and explore the hardware and software features that allow easy control of parameters such as magnification, focus, and lighting. Beyond basic operation, we will also look at more specialised techniques such as focus stacking, large specimen observation, lighting manipulation, and video recording. A number of case studies in heritage science, conservation, and natural sciences will be presented.
Bob Gooday is a geological analyst for National Museums Scotland. He is responsible for the scientific preparation and analysis of mineralogical and geological specimens using X-ray analyses, scanning electron microscopy, and various microscopic and photographic techniques.
