The workshop "Modular Cleaning Program: A Systemic Approach to Cleaning Artworks" is aimed at conservators involved in the cleaning of painted and decorative surfaces as well as those interested in general knowledge and practice of using aqueous systems, solvent systems, emulsions, and microemulsions including Baglioni-style microemulsions and dewetting.

Each participant will leave the workshop with a full set of MCP concentrate solutions so the system can be used immediately upon returning to their studio. Most components can travel in checked luggage on flights home.

Chris Stavroudis, Paintings Conservator in private practice, will present an overview of the theoretical principles needed to evaluate and formulate tailored aqueous,
solvent-based, emulsion, and microeumulsion cleaning systems for a variety of conservation problems.

The 5-day Modular Cleaning Program Workshop includes lectures, mixing of the MCP concentrated stock solutions, and hands-on, practical exercises. Participants will gain a solid foundation in the theory and practice of formulating aqueous cleaning solutions, solvent gels, polymer-stabilized emulsions, w/o and o/w microemulsions, and the use of silicone solvents and gelling agents.

Participants will also learn to use the Modular Cleaning Program software (MCP), developed by Chris Stavroudis. They will learn to walk-through and document the process of selecting an optimized cleaning system. The database assists the conservator in combining the stock solutions, provides information about the solutions and their components, and assists in specifying and mixing new solutions.
Upon completion of the workshop, the participants will leave with a full set of MCP concentrates.  (The solutions alone represent $200-$250 in materials per participant.) By the end, all attendees should be comfortable mixing the solutions, working through aqueous, emulsion, microemulsion, and test cleanings. The participants will also leave with an understanding of how various changes in materials will affect the cleaning solution and how this relates to the chemistry of the surface and cleaning system.

Cost: $575.00 includes materials, lunch, and afternoon coffee/tea. (Breakfast and dinner are not included)

Please send a letter of interest by February 17, 2023, to Briana Vargas, bvargas@mfah.org
Limit to 20 participants. Selected candidates will be notified after February 21, 2023
