Introduction
Over the last 30 years, interest in the Japanese paper conservation tradition has grown among the paper conservation community in Ibero-America. The main focus has been on understanding Japanese techniques, materials and tools. Most documentary heritage conservators have acquired this knowledge by attending the annual Japanese Paper Conservation Course (JPC), jointly organized by TNRICP and ICCROM, which has been held in Tokyo since 1992.
Experience has shown that a proper understanding of the materials and tools, as well as the correct application of Japanese paper conservation techniques, is essential before incorporating and adapting them to the conservation of works on paper in Ibero-America.
For this reason, the CNCPC-INAH, the Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties and ICCROM have been offering the "International Course on Paper Conservation in Latin America: An Encounter with the East" since 2012.
We are pleased to announce the ninth edition of the course, which will take place from 10 to 21 November 2025 at the National Conservation Coordination of the National Institute of Anthropology and History in Mexico City.
The course
The course aims to provide an introduction to the basic concepts of Japanese materials and techniques and to foster participants' understanding of the fundamental characteristics of the Japanese paper conservation tradition.
It also seeks to facilitate the adaptation of Japanese paper conservation traditions, applying their materials and techniques to works from other regions, with special attention to the heritage of Latin America.
Finally, the exchange of experiences in paper conservation is promoted among the Ibero-American professionals attending the course.
