Background

Over the past 30 years, interest in Japanese paper conservation traditions has grown within the paper conservation community in Latin America, Portugal and Spain. Most are interested in understanding Japanese techniques, materials and tools. Conservation professionals acquire this knowledge by participating in either the ICCROM-Tokyo National Research Institute for Cultural Properties' (TNRICP) Japanese Paper Conservation Course or workshops led by colleagues who have learned from Japanese professionals.

JPC paper conservation - Former ParticipantaHowever, it is essential to fully understand the materials, tools and techniques used in Japanese paper conservation before integrating them into a different context: in this case, the Latin American context.

To promote such understanding, CNCPC-INAH, TNRICP and ICCROM have offered the "International Course on Paper Conservation in Latin America: Meeting East" for the past decade. The course helps participants to incorporate Japanese paper conservation techniques into Latin American paper-based collections and adapt them as needed.

The course was held virtually the past two years. Pending the evolution of the global health situation, we plan to resume the in-presence course from 9 to 22 November 2022 in Mexico City, Mexico.

Course goals

  • Improve participants' understanding of the essential characteristics of traditional Japanese paper conservation.
  • Encourage adapting Japanese conservation techniques to other regions' paper-based heritage – particularly Iberoamerican heritage.
  • Spur the exchange of paper conservation experiences and knowledge among Iberoamerican professionals.

Methodology

The course is an intensive two-week programme combining theory and practice through lectures and experimental work. Frequent and enthusiastic interaction among participants and instructors is necessary for fruitful discussions and a successful course.

Participants

The international course is open to a maximum of nine (9) participants working in Latin America and the Caribbean, Spain or Portugal. Candidates must have at least five years of working experience in paper conservation. Preference will be given to candidates who work in an institution, are involved in training activities, or lead conservation teams.
