ICCROM is deeply saddened by the loss of lives and extensive damage, including to natural and cultural heritage, resulting from the catastrophic wildfires currently ongoing in many parts of the world. Our Director-General and staff wish to extend their condolences to the people and governments of our Member States in all continents currently experiencing the devastating effects of wildfires.

New project to preserve 1.5-million-year-old human footprint fossil in Kenya 

In collaboration with National Museums of Kenya and with financial contribution from the British Council Cultural Protection Fund, ICCROM is engaged in a community-centred project focused on the long-term preservation of fossil footprints that date back to approximately 1.5 million years ago. The fossil was found in Ileret, a village on the North Eastern shore of Lake Turkana, Kenya.
