The second edition of the International Training Course on Post-Crisis Recovery of Cultural Heritage (PCR-2025) moved into its next phase this week in Asti, Italy, with the launch of an intensive, week-long in-person workshop. This follows the successful completion of the online module, which prepared participants for the hands-on activities and field engagement to come.

The inaugural session, held at the headquarters of the Fondazione Giovanni Goria, opened with institutional greetings from its President, Mr. Marco Goria, followed by welcoming remarks from the Mayor of Asti, Mr. Maurizio Rasero, and other local representatives.

After the opening, participants took part in a heritage walk through Asti’s historic centre, exploring key landmarks and learning about the impact of the 1994 Piedmont flood on the region’s cultural heritage. A particularly meaningful stop was the Confraternita della Santissima Trinità e Sant’Evasio, where the restoration team presented the church’s post-flood recovery project, emphasizing the important role of documentation in guiding effective restoration.

The workshop programme for the week involves a field visit to Canelli and the Val Bormida area to examine firsthand the effects of the 1994 flood on cultural heritage and to learn from the recovery efforts led by various regional stakeholders. A series of lectures and case studies will address recovery planning, implementation strategies, fundraising, and monitoring methodologies. In addition, a practical hands-on workshop will focus on consolidation methods and the application of structural reinforcement materials.

PCR-2025 is part of an ongoing collaboration between ICCROM and the Fondazione Santagata for the Economics of Culture, dedicated to strengthening post-crisis heritage recovery capacities worldwide.

This initiative is made possible through the generous support of the ALIPH Foundation and Kimia S.p.A with the valued contribution of Fondazione Giovanni Goria.
