AFRICAN WORLD HERITAGE YOUNG LEADERS WORKSHOP

Background
On the occasion of the worldwide celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the World Heritage Convention under the theme “The next 50: World Heritage as a source for resilience, humanity and Innovation”, the Government of the Republic of South Africa, in collaboration with the African World Heritage Fund, the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the UNESCO Regional Office for Southern Africa, ICCROM and the Robben Island Museum, are pleased to announce the call for Participants for the African World Heritage Young Leaders Workshop, to be held from 20th to 25th May at Robben Island, South Africa.
This workshop is a flagship component of the Youth.Heritage.Africa programme, an initiative of ICCROM in partnership with the School of African Heritage (EPA) and the AWHF. The African World Heritage Young Leaders Workshop under the theme “Of the Past, to the Future: Strengthening the Resilience of African World Heritage through Youth Leadership and Innovation” will culminate with the official launch of both the Youth.Heritage.Africa programme and the 50th Anniversary Expert Meeting on 25 May (Africa Day), showing therefore the critical role the African Youth can/must play for both the effective implementation of the UNESCO Conventions and the African Union Agenda 2063: the Africa We Want.
Aims and expected outcomes
The African World Heritage Young Leaders Workshop aims to nurture leadership skills of Young Africans to support the implementation of the World Heritage Convention and sustainable development efforts in Africa. The participants will produce “The Youth Declaration on World Heritage in Africa: the next 50”.
Participants
Twenty-five (25) young leaders from all African countries will be selected for the workshop based on the quality of their application. Applicants must fulfil all the following requirements:
- African citizen between 18 – 35 years old.
- Minimum requirements: a post-secondary certified training and/or qualification
- Fluency in English and/or French (being the working languages of the Workshop)
- Personal and professional attributes: motivated, active, driven individuals interested in developing their leadership skills while championing sustainable conservation and promotion of Africa’s World Heritage and engage in a World Heritage network of young Africans eager to implement the outcomes of the Workshop in their home countries.
- Acquainted with online media and digital platforms (social media e.g; Snapchat, Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).
